Our unit was asked to do the opening flag ceremony. They did a great job.

During the day we visited many re-enactors who told us about various battles and cities around Vicksburg during the Civil War. They also told us what life was like during the Civil War era. We also had fun shooting tennis balls at a replica gun boat!

We had a little extra time so we had an impromptu stick pull contest.

During the afternoon the re-enactors, and a group from the National Park Service who were being trained on how to fire canons, explained the process and demonstrated it as well. We were woken up at 6 am with a canon firing and we heard them all throughout the day.

During the evening we cooked dinner (breakfast and dinner were both period-correct) and then went to another canon demonstration (at night so we could see the muzzle fire better) and then special campfire where two flags were retired.
